Meaning

State Highways (SH) are roads built and looked after by state governments. They link the state capital to district headquarters and join up with the national highways. They form the middle tier of India's road network, between the national highways above and the district and rural roads below. They carry traffic within a state, while national highways carry traffic between states.

Example

In any state, a state highway runs from the capital to a district headquarters, for example from Lucknow to a district town in Uttar Pradesh, and meets a national highway along the way.

Don't confuse with

  • National Highways: built by the Centre (run by NHAI) for movement between states and for defence. State Highways are built by states for travel within the state.
