Nallamala hills
Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Structure and Physiography"
Meaning
The Nallamala hills are a range of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They are relict hills, meaning the worn-down stumps of very old mountains. Like the rest of the Eastern Ghats, they are low and broken, unlike the continuous Western Ghats. They are thickly forested, which makes them important for wildlife.
Example
The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve lies in the Nallamala hills, close to the Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Don't confuse with
- Nilgiri hills: they are the high hill block where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet, in Tamil Nadu. The Nallamala are lower, separate hills of the Eastern Ghats further north.
