Thal Ghat and Bhor Ghat
Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Thal Ghat and Bhor Ghat are passes through the Western Ghats, called the Sahyadri in Maharashtra. A ghat here means a mountain pass or steep road up a slope. The Sahyadri rise like a wall behind the coast. These two gaps let roads and railways climb from the low Konkan coast to the Deccan plateau. That makes them key routes for trade and travel out of Mumbai.
Example
Thal Ghat carries the Mumbai-Nashik road and railway. Bhor Ghat carries the Mumbai-Pune road and railway. Both are in Maharashtra.
Don't confuse with
- Palghat Gap: it is a 30-40 km wide break between the Nilgiri and Anaimalai hills that links Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Thal and Bhor are narrower passes in the Sahyadri of Maharashtra.
