National Steel Policy 2017
Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The National Steel Policy 2017 is the Government of India's plan to expand steel production. It targets 300 million tonnes of steel-making capacity by 2030-31 (verify current). The policy matters because steel is a basic industry that other industries depend on, and India's demand for steel is rising. The industry's main weak spot is that it depends on imported coking coal.
Example
India became the world's second-largest crude steel producer in 2018. New capacity is coming up at Kalinganagar, Angul and Jharsuguda in Odisha, and in coastal locations, where imported coal can arrive by sea (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- Green Steel Taxonomy (December 2024): this grades steel by its emissions per tonne. The National Steel Policy 2017 sets targets for how much steel India can produce.
