National Waterway 4
Also called: NW-4 · Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 7 "Lifelines of National Economy"
Meaning
National Waterway 4 (NW-4) joins stretches of the Godavari and Krishna rivers with the Kakinada-Puducherry stretch of canals. It is 1,078 km long (NCERT). It runs through Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The river stretches lie in flat delta land, and the canals run along the east coast. Together they form a water path that can carry bulky goods such as farm produce, cement and coal cheaply.
Example
The canal near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh is part of NW-4. The route continues south along the coast through Tamil Nadu to Puducherry.
Don't confuse with
- National Waterway 5: also on the east coast, but further north. It runs through Odisha and West Bengal on the Brahmani, Mahanadi delta channels and the East Coast Canal. NW-4 is on the Godavari and Krishna in the south.
