National Waterway 5
Also called: NW-5 · Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 7 "Lifelines of National Economy"
Meaning
National Waterway 5 (NW-5) is 588 km long (NCERT) and runs through Odisha and West Bengal. It joins four parts: the Brahmani river, the Matai river, the delta channels of the Mahanadi and Brahmani, and the East Coast Canal. A delta channel is one of the many branches a river splits into near the sea. NW-5 can carry bulky goods such as coal and minerals cheaply between the inland areas and the coast.
Example
Boats can use the Brahmani and the Mahanadi delta channels in coastal Odisha. The East Coast Canal then carries the route north towards West Bengal.
Don't confuse with
