Negative growth of population
Also called: Population decline · Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"
Meaning
Negative growth of population means a population gets smaller between two points of time. It happens when births fall below deaths, or when many people emigrate (move out), or both. It is common in rich, ageing societies where people have few children. It can lead to labour shortages and empty villages.
Example
Japan, in East Asia, has negative growth. Its births are below its deaths, and many rural villages are emptying. Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the Baltic states, Italy, South Korea, and China since 2022, also show decline (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- Positive growth of population: in positive growth, the population rises because births exceed deaths or people move in permanently.
