Positive growth of population
Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"
Meaning
Positive growth of population means a population gets bigger between two points of time. It happens when births are more than deaths, or when people migrate permanently into the region. The increase can be shown as a number of people or as a percentage, which is called the growth rate.
Example
India's population rose from 102.70 crore in 2001 to 121.02 crore in 2011, an increase of about 18.3 crore. This is positive growth, driven mainly by births being higher than deaths.
Don't confuse with
- Negative growth of population: in negative growth, the population falls because deaths exceed births or people move out.
