Node

Geography glossary

Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 6 "Tertiary and Quaternary Activities"

Meaning

A node is a point in a transport network. It can be a place where two or more routes meet, a point where a journey starts (origin) or ends (destination), or any large town along a route. Nodes are joined to each other by routes called links. Nodes where many links meet become major hubs for trade and travel.

Example

Delhi is a major node in India's network. Many national highways, railway lines and air routes meet there, so it is a large origin and destination for both people and freight.

Don't confuse with

  • Link: a link is the route between two nodes. A node is the meeting point or town itself.
