Pattern in image interpretation
Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Introduction to Remote Sensing"
Meaning
Pattern is the way features are arranged again and again across an image. Many man-made and natural features have a typical layout that is easier to spot than any single object. It is one of the image characteristics used in visual interpretation. Pattern helps tell planned areas from unplanned ones, and orchards from natural forest.
Example
Chandigarh's planned sectors show a regular grid of roads and uniform blocks of housing. An orchard shows trees in evenly spaced rows. Natural forest shows a mixed, irregular spread of trees.
Don't confuse with
- Texture: how often the tone changes within a small area, from fine to coarse, made by features too small to see one by one. Pattern is the arrangement of features large enough to be seen separately.
