Polavaram project
Topic: Water Resources of India: Availability, Use and Conservation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Polavaram is a multipurpose project on the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh. The Centre has declared it a national project. Its right canal carries surplus Godavari water to the Krishna river, so it also works as a river link. Its reservoir will flood land upstream, much of it home to tribal people. Because of this, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana object to it (verify current).
Example
Water from the Godavari is carried through Polavaram's right canal into the Krishna basin in Andhra Pradesh. The dam's height and how much tribal land it will flood upstream are still debated between the states.
Don't confuse with
- Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project: it is also on the Godavari, but in Telangana. It pumps water uphill in many stages instead of storing it behind one large dam.
