Geography glossary

Topic: Human Settlements and Urbanisation in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Human Settlements"

Meaning

Post-independence new towns are the towns that came up after 1947. Some were planned as state capitals. Others were built as industrial towns around big public-sector plants. Older towns near big cities grew as satellite towns. Many medium and small towns also grew as investment reached rural areas.

Example

Chandigarh, designed by Le Corbusier, was planned as a new capital for Punjab. Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar and Dispur are other planned capitals. Industrial towns include Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Durgapur (West Bengal), Sindri (Jharkhand) and Barauni (Bihar).

Don't confuse with

  • Modern (colonial) towns: these were built by the British and other Europeans before 1947, such as ports, hill stations and cantonments.
