Satellite town
Topic: Human Settlements and Urbanisation in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Human Settlements"
Meaning
A satellite town is a smaller town that grows around a big city. Its people depend on the big city for jobs and services, and many travel there every day. At the same time it takes some of the city's crowding by giving people homes and work outside the core. Planned satellite towns can also slow unplanned sprawl.
Example
Ghaziabad, Rohtak and Gurugram are satellite towns of Delhi. They lie in the National Capital Region, set up under the NCR Planning Board Act 1985.
Don't confuse with
- Counter-magnet: a rival centre built to pull growth away from a big city, not just to house its overflow. Navi Mumbai was planned from 1971 as a counter-magnet to Mumbai.
