Quantitative map

Geography glossary

Also called: Statistical map · Topic: Graphical Representation of Data and Thematic Maps · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Graphical Representation of Data"

Meaning

A quantitative map is a thematic map that shows variations that can be measured. Values are grouped into number classes, and each class gets its own shade or symbol. It is also called a statistical map. NCERT teaches how to draw three kinds: dot maps (for counts), choropleth maps (for ratios such as density by state or district) and isopleth maps (lines joining places of equal value).

Example

A rainfall map of India with four classes, more than 200 cm, 100–200 cm, 50–100 cm and less than 50 cm, is a quantitative map. The Western Ghats coast and Meghalaya fall in the top class, and western Rajasthan falls in the lowest.

Don't confuse with

  • A qualitative map shows only types or broad labels, such as "high" and "low" rainfall, with no numbers. A quantitative map shows measured values in classes.
