Thematic map

Geography glossary

Also called: Distribution map, Special purpose map · Topic: Graphical Representation of Data and Thematic Maps · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Introduction to Maps"; Class 12, Ch 3 "Graphical Representation of Data"

Meaning

A thematic map shows how one theme, or a few themes, are spread across an area. The theme might be population density, rainfall or literacy, and it is drawn over a base map. It is also called a distribution map or special purpose map. Graphs and diagrams can compare values, but they cannot show where those values occur. A thematic map adds that regional view. To make one, you need data for each state or district, an outline map with administrative boundaries, and a physical map of the region. The finished map must give the area's name, a title, the data source and year, a key to symbols and shades, and the scale.

Example

NCERT's literacy map of India based on Census 2001 shades each state by its literacy rate. Rates run from 47.0% in Bihar to 90.9% in Kerala.

Don't confuse with

  • A general-purpose (reference) map, such as a topographical sheet, shows many features together, including relief, rivers, roads and settlements. A thematic map focuses on one subject.
