Sources of the earth's internal heat

Geography glossary

Topic: Geomorphic Processes: Weathering, Mass Movement, Erosion and Soil Formation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Distribution of Oceans and Continents"; Class 11, Ch 5 "Geomorphic Processes"

Meaning

The earth's internal heat comes from three main sources:

  • radioactivity: radioactive elements in rocks give off heat as they break down;
  • rotational and tidal friction: rubbing caused by the earth's spin and by tides;
  • primordial heat: heat left over from when the earth formed.

This heat flows outwards and powers diastrophism and volcanism. Heat flow differs from place to place, so endogenic forces act unevenly.

Example

At Manikaran in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, hot springs bring water warmed by the earth's internal heat to the surface.
