Also called: Vulcanism · Topic: Geomorphic Processes: Weathering, Mass Movement, Erosion and Soil Formation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Geomorphic Processes"
Meaning
Volcanism is the movement of molten rock (magma) onto or towards the earth's surface. Magma that cools underground forms intrusive features. Lava that pours out forms extrusive features. Volcanism is an endogenic process powered by the earth's internal heat.
Example
Barren Island in the Andaman Sea is India's only active volcano. Its eruptions are a present-day example of volcanism.
Don't confuse with
- Volcano: this is the vent (opening) and the landform built around it. Volcanism is the whole process of magma moving upwards.
