South Pacific sea route
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The South Pacific sea route links Western Europe and North America with Australia, New Zealand and the scattered Pacific islands. Ships reach the Pacific through the Panama Canal. The route is also used to reach Hong Kong, the Philippines and Indonesia. Its distances are very long, so mid-ocean ports matter a lot.
Example
A ship sailing from Panama to Sydney (Australia) covers about 12,000 km. Honolulu (Hawaii) is an important port on the way.
Don't confuse with
- North Pacific sea route: this one links the west coast of North America with East and Southeast Asia, and its routes meet at Honolulu.
