Steady growth phase

Geography glossary

Also called: Phase II (1921-1951) · Topic: Population of India: Distribution, Density, Growth and Composition · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Composition"

Meaning

The steady growth phase is the second phase of India's population growth, from 1921 to 1951. Better health care, sanitation and transport cut the death rate. The birth rate stayed high. Since fewer people died but just as many were born, the population grew at a steady pace. This happened even through the Great Depression and World War II. The year 1921 is called the "Great Divide" because growth never fell again after it.

Example

India grew by 13.31% in 1941-51. This was much faster than in 1911-21, when the population actually fell by 0.31%.

Don't confuse with

  • Population explosion phase (1951-81): deaths fell much faster in that phase, and growth peaked at 24.80% in 1961-71. The steady phase saw growth rise, but far more slowly.
