Meaning
The Stockton and Darlington Railway in north-east England opened in 1825. It was probably the world's first public railway. Steam engines pulled its trains. Example
The line ran between the towns of Stockton and Darlington in north-east England. Its success started the railway age, which spread to Europe, North America and India.
Don't confuse with
- London Underground: opened in 1863, it is the world's oldest underground railway (a railway running in tunnels under a city). The Stockton and Darlington was an open-air line, and it came 38 years earlier.
