Uspallata Pass
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Uspallata Pass is a high gap through the Andes Mountains between Argentina and Chile. It lies at about 3,900 m, near Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes. A pass is a low point in a mountain range that allows people to cross. The Trans-Andean Railway crosses the Andes through this pass.
Example
The Trans-Andean Railway runs from Buenos Aires (Argentina) on the Atlantic side to Valparaiso (Chile) on the Pacific side, through the Uspallata Pass. It is South America's only trans-continental line. Its cross-border section has not run since 1984.
Don't confuse with
- Pan-American Highway: a road of about 30,000 km from Alaska to southern Argentina. It runs along the length of the Americas instead of crossing the Andes from east to west.
