TAPI pipeline
Also called: Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline · Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
TAPI stands for Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India. It is a planned natural gas pipeline of about 1,800 km. It would start at Turkmenistan's Galkynysh gas field and pass through Herat and Kandahar in Afghanistan and Multan in Pakistan. It would end at Fazilka in Punjab, India. It would give India a land route for gas from Central Asia. Fighting and poor security along the route have stalled it for years (verify current).
Example
On paper, gas from Galkynysh in Turkmenistan would flow south-east across Afghanistan and Pakistan. It would enter India at Fazilka, near the Pakistan border in Punjab.
Don't confuse with
- Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline: it was planned to bring gas from Iran's South Pars field. India left those talks around 2009. TAPI starts in Turkmenistan, not Iran.
