Adil Shahi dynasty
Also called: Bijapur sultanate · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Adil Shahi dynasty ruled the Bijapur sultanate in the western Deccan. Yusuf Adil Shah founded it in c. 1489–90. He had been a governor (tarafdar) under the Bahmani Sultanate, which was breaking up at the time. Bijapur became one of the five Deccan Sultanates and a main rival of Vijayanagara for fertile land and trade. The dynasty lasted until Aurangzeb annexed (took over) Bijapur in 1686.
Example
In 1520 Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara badly defeated Bijapur. In 1565, Bijapur joined Ahmadnagar and Golconda to crush Vijayanagara at the battle of Rakshasi-Tangadi (Talikota). Later Adil Shahi rulers built the Gol Gumbaz and the Ibrahim Rauza at Bijapur.
Don't confuse with
- Nizam Shahi dynasty: this dynasty ruled Ahmadnagar, not Bijapur, and the Mughals ended it earlier, in 1633.
