Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah
Also called: Hasan Gangu · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah, also called Hasan Gangu, founded the Bahmani Sultanate in the Deccan. He was an officer under Muhammad bin Tughlaq who rebelled against Delhi's rule. In 1347 he became sultan, with Gulbarga (renamed Ahsanabad) as his capital. His state became Vijayanagara's main northern rival in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Example
In 1347, Hasan Gangu was crowned sultan at Gulbarga. That was only about 11 years after Harihara and Bukka founded Vijayanagara in 1336. Both states grew out of the Deccan's revolt against the Tughlaqs, and they soon fought each other over the Raichur doab.
Don't confuse with
- Harihara and Bukka: they were also former Tughlaq officers who rejected Delhi's authority. But they founded Vijayanagara in 1336, south of the Krishna river, and not the Bahmani state.
