Ibrahim Adil Shah II
Also called: Jagadguru · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Ibrahim Adil Shah II was the Sultan of Bijapur from 1580 to 1627. He is remembered for his tolerance of all faiths and his deep love of music. He wrote the Kitab-i-Nauras, a book of songs in Dakhni, the early Urdu spoken in the Deccan. The songs praise Hindu deities such as Saraswati and Ganesha as well as Sufi saints. Because of this, people called him Jagadguru ("teacher of the world").
Example
At Bijapur he planned a new city called Nauraspur, where music would flourish. His tomb, the Ibrahim Rauza at Bijapur, is one of the finest buildings in the Deccan.
Don't confuse with
- Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah: he was a Golconda sultan and poet of the same period. He founded Hyderabad and was not a ruler of Bijapur.
