All India States Peoples Conference

History glossary

Also called: AISPC · Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The All India States Peoples Conference (AISPC) was founded in 1927. It brought together the people's movements in the princely states. These were states ruled by Indian kings under British protection. Each state had its own Praja Mandal, a "people's association" that demanded civil rights and responsible government. Responsible government means ministers who answer to the people, not only to the ruler. The AISPC linked these local bodies into one national body.

Example

In 1939 Jawaharlal Nehru became president of the AISPC. This tied the struggles in the princely states closely to the Congress-led national movement.

Don't confuse with

  • Chamber of Princes: a body of the rulers of the princely states. The AISPC spoke for their subjects, often against those same rulers.
