Linguistic Pradesh Congress Committees
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) were the Congress's units in each province. From the Nagpur session of December 1920, the Congress set these up by language regions, not by the British province borders. Gandhi also wanted the nationalist message spread in people's own mother tongues, not in English. This took the national movement to ordinary people in every region and helped make it a mass movement.
Example
The large British province of Madras Presidency was split, for Congress purposes, into separate committees for Andhra (Telugu speakers) and Tamil Nadu (Tamil speakers). Each could reach people in their own language.
Don't confuse with
- Linguistic states after independence: in 1920 the Congress used language only to organise its own party. Indian states were redrawn on language lines only after independence, mainly in 1956.
