Meaning

C. Rajagopalachari, often called Rajaji, was a Congress leader from Madras who was a close follower of Gandhi. He belonged to the group of leaders who joined Gandhi between 1917 and 1922 and helped turn the national movement into a mass movement. He went on to hold high office both before and after independence. He was the only Indian to serve as Governor-General of independent India.

Example

In 1930, during the Civil Disobedience Movement, Rajaji led a salt march from Tiruchirappalli to Vedaranyam on the Tamil coast and broke the salt law there. His march matched Gandhi's Dandi March in western India.

Don't confuse with

  • C.R. Das: a Bengal leader who set up the Swaraj Party with Motilal Nehru to take part in the councils. Rajaji was from Madras and was one of the "no-changers", who stayed with Gandhi's constructive work and did not join the councils.
