Bahauddin Zakariya
Topic: Bhakti and Sufi Traditions · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Bhakti-Sufi Traditions"
Meaning
Shaikh Bahauddin Zakariya (c. 1170–1262) of Multan set up the Suhrawardi sufi order in India. The Chishtis kept their distance from rulers. The Suhrawardis did the opposite: they accepted royal grants, owned wealth and sometimes held court posts. This contrast is a favourite exam point.
Example
Sultan Iltutmish of Delhi gave Bahauddin Zakariya the title Shaikh-ul-Islam, meaning chief religious leader. Bahauddin's tomb-shrine stands in Multan, in present-day Pakistan.
Don't confuse with
- Baba Farid (d. 1265): a Chishti master of the same period whose dargah is at Ajodhan. He was known for poverty and for staying away from rulers.
