Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Chand Bibi was a princess of the Nizam Shahi family of Ahmadnagar. She married into the Adil Shahi family of Bijapur, and for a time she was regent there. A regent is someone who rules for a king who is too young. She is best remembered as a brave leader who defended Ahmadnagar against the Mughals in the late 16th century.
Example
In 1595–96, Chand Bibi led the defence of Ahmadnagar fort when Akbar's army attacked it, and she forced the Mughals to make a treaty. She died in 1600, by most accounts killed by her own men. Ahmadnagar fort fell to the Mughals that same year.
Don't confuse with
- Rani Durgavati: she was the queen of Gondwana in central India who fought Akbar's army in 1564. She had nothing to do with the Deccan Sultanates.
