D.G. Tendulkar
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
D.G. Tendulkar wrote a famous biography of Gandhi called Mahatma, in eight volumes. The work is close to a day-by-day record of Gandhi's life, his words and his work. Historians, including NCERT, use it as a source for Gandhi's last months.
Example
Tendulkar describes Gandhi after Partition in 1947. Gandhi visited hospitals and refugee camps, and he appealed to Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs to forget the past and live in peace. These pages show what the note calls Gandhi's "finest hour".
Don't confuse with
- Gandhi's own autobiography (The Story of My Experiments with Truth): Gandhi wrote it himself, from memory, so it shows how he saw his own life. Tendulkar was an outsider, writing a biography built from records and Gandhi's speeches.
