History glossary

Also called: Dakhni, Deccani Urdu, Deccani · Topic: Bhakti and Sufi Traditions · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Bhakti-Sufi Traditions"

Meaning

Dakhani is a form of Urdu that grew up in the Deccan. In the 17th–18th centuries, Chishti sufis around Bijapur wrote short poems in it. Women sang these poems while doing household work such as grinding grain and spinning. Through this simple medium, Islam spread in the villages of the Deccan.

Example

Bijapur sufis wrote Dakhani songs such as the charkhanama (sung at the spinning wheel), lurinama (lullabies) and shadinama (wedding songs). Kannada vachanas and Marathi abhangs probably inspired them.

Don't confuse with

  • Hindavi: the language the Chishtis of Delhi spoke in north India. Dakhani was its southern cousin, used in the Deccan.
