Meaning

The Dasam Granth is a collection of writings that tradition credits to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Sikh Guru. It was compiled after his death, traditionally by Bhai Mani Singh. It includes hymns of praise, stories of heroes and his own life story. Scholars still argue over who wrote some parts of it. It is a separate book from the Guru Granth Sahib, which remains the Sikhs' holy scripture.

Example

The Dasam Granth includes the Jaap Sahib, a prayer, and the Zafarnama (c. 1705), Guru Gobind Singh's Persian letter to Aurangzeb. In the Zafarnama, the Guru blamed the emperor for broken promises and injustice.

Don't confuse with

  • Guru Granth Sahib: this is the Sikhs' holy scripture and their eternal Guru. Guru Arjan first compiled it. The Dasam Granth is a later, separate collection.
