Meaning
Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib (also spelt Sis Gunj Sahib) is a Sikh shrine in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. It marks the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru, was publicly beheaded in 1675 on Aurangzeb's orders. He had chosen to protect Kashmiri Pandits who were facing religious persecution. When ordered to convert to Islam, he refused, even under torture. The gurudwara stands as a symbol of sacrifice for the freedom of faith.
Example
Every year since 1979, the Sikh Regiment has saluted Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, in front of the President, during the Republic Day parade in New Delhi.
Don't confuse with
- Gurudwara Bangla Sahib: this Delhi shrine is linked to Guru Har Krishan, who died of smallpox in 1664. Sis Ganj Sahib marks Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom in 1675.
