Topic: Framing the Indian Constitution · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Framing the Constitution"
Meaning
The Flag Committee was a committee of the Constituent Assembly. Its job was to decide the design of India's National Flag. Its president was J.B. Kripalani. On its basis, the Assembly adopted the tricolour just before Independence. The flag became a key symbol of the new nation.
Example
On 22 July 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru moved the flag resolution in the Assembly. It described a horizontal tricolour of saffron, white and dark green in equal parts, with a navy-blue wheel at the centre. The Assembly adopted it.
Don't confuse with
- Fundamental Rights Sub-Committee: J.B. Kripalani also headed this. It dealt with citizens' rights, not national symbols.
