National Flag of India
Also called: Tiranga, National flag adoption 1947 · Topic: Framing the Indian Constitution · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Framing the Constitution"
Meaning
The National Flag of India, the Tiranga, is a horizontal tricolour. It has three equal bands of saffron, white and dark green. A navy-blue wheel sits at the centre. The wheel is the Ashoka Chakra, taken from the Sarnath lion capital of Emperor Ashoka. The Constituent Assembly adopted the flag shortly before Independence. It stands for a free and united nation.
Example
On 22 July 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru moved the flag resolution in the Constituent Assembly, and the Assembly adopted the tricolour. It was raised as free India's flag on 15 August 1947.
Don't confuse with
- Congress Swaraj flag (1931): it had the same three colours but a spinning wheel (charkha) at the centre. It was a party flag. The National Flag replaced the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra.
