Sachchidananda Sinha
Topic: Framing the Indian Constitution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Sachchidananda Sinha was a senior lawyer and public figure from Bihar. He was the oldest member of the Constituent Assembly. For this reason, he presided over its very first meeting as temporary chairman. Two days later, the Assembly chose a permanent President.
Example
On 9 December 1946, Sachchidananda Sinha chaired the opening sitting of the Constituent Assembly in New Delhi. On 11 December 1946, Rajendra Prasad was elected as the Assembly's permanent President.
Don't confuse with
- Rajendra Prasad: he was the permanent President of the Assembly. He guided all its debates and made sure every member could speak. Sinha only chaired the first meeting.
- H.C. Mookerjee: he was the Assembly's Vice-President, not its temporary chairman.
