Meaning
The Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) was a revolutionary organisation founded in 1924. Its founders included Sachindranath Sanyal, Ram Prasad Bismil and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee. It aimed to end British rule through armed revolution and to set up a republic. It grew out of the disappointment that followed the withdrawal of the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922.
Example
HRA members carried out the Kakori train robbery in 1925, taking government money from a train near Lucknow. Bismil and others were later hanged for it.
Don't confuse with
- Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA, 1928): the HRA was reorganised under this name, with Bhagat Singh among its leaders. The new name added socialism as a stated goal.
