Topic: The Mughal Empire: Babur to Aurangzeb · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"
Meaning
Humayun was the second Mughal emperor and the son of Babur. He ruled from 1530 to 1540, and again from 1555 to 1556. He struggled to hold the new empire together. The Afghan leader Sher Shah Suri took advantage of this and drove him out of India. After about fifteen years in exile, Humayun won back Delhi in 1555 with Persian help. He died soon after, in an accident.
Example
Humayun lost to Sher Shah at Chausa (1539) and Kannauj (1540), then fled to Persia. In 1556, a year after his return, he fell down the stairs of his library in Delhi and died. His young son Akbar became emperor.
Don't confuse with
- Humayun's tomb: this is the grand tomb built for him in Delhi after his death. It is not a building he made himself.
