Meaning

The Humayun-nama is a Persian account of the life and times of Emperor Humayun. It was written by Gulbadan Begum, Babur's daughter and Humayun's half-sister. She wrote it at Akbar's request, when he wanted the history of his family recorded. It is rare because it was written by a woman. It shows the Mughal family and household from the inside: the women, the journeys, the hardships of exile.

Example

Gulbadan Begum describes the family's sufferings during Humayun's flight after his defeat by Sher Shah in 1540. She tells these events through the eyes of the royal women.

Don't confuse with

  • Baburnama: this is Babur's own autobiography. The Humayun-nama was written about Humayun by his sister.
