Meaning
The Ibrahim Rauza is a tomb-and-mosque complex at Bijapur. It was built for Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II and finished in the early 17th century (c. 1626–27). The tomb and the mosque face each other on one raised platform, inside a walled garden. People admire it for its balanced shape, slim minarets and very fine carving in stone.
Example
The Rauza was built on Ibrahim Adil Shah II's orders. He and members of his family are buried there. It is often cited as one of the best examples of Adil Shahi architecture.
Don't confuse with
- Gol Gumbaz: this is also at Bijapur. It is the tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah and is famous for one huge dome and its whispering gallery. The Rauza is famous instead for its fine carving and its proportions.
