Meaning

Indian Opinion was a weekly newspaper started in Natal, South Africa, in 1903. Gandhi was closely tied to it and used it to speak for Indians there. It reported unfair laws against Indians and explained the idea of satyagraha to its readers. It came out in English and Gujarati, and in its early years also in Hindi and Tamil. From 1904 it was printed at the Phoenix Settlement near Durban, where the residents did the printing work themselves.

Example

In 1906–07, Indian Opinion carried news of the campaign against the Transvaal registration law. It helped Gandhi build support among scattered Indian traders and workers.
