Moderates
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
The Moderates were the early leaders of the Congress. Among them were Dadabhai Naoroji, Pherozeshah Mehta and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. They believed in slow, step-by-step reform through constitutional methods. This meant petitions, speeches, resolutions and arguments made to the British. They trusted British fairness more than the Extremists did. The young Muhammad Ali Jinnah was also among them. Gokhale was Gandhi's political mentor.
Example
Gokhale advised Gandhi to spend his first year back in India (1915) travelling across the country to understand it. The Moderates' gentle methods were challenged during the Swadeshi movement of 1905–07, which led to the Surat split of 1907.
Don't confuse with
- Extremists: Lal, Bal and Pal wanted boycott, swadeshi and mass protest, not just petitions.
- Liberals: This was the later name for Moderates who left the Congress around 1918 and formed their own federation.
