Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Kalaram temple entry movement was a satyagraha, or non-violent protest, at Nashik in Maharashtra. B.R. Ambedkar and others began it in 1930. It demanded that untouchables be allowed to enter the Kalaram temple. It went on for several years but did not succeed. It showed dalits claiming equal religious rights through their own protest.
Example
In March 1930, thousands of dalit satyagrahis gathered at the Kalaram temple in Nashik. The temple doors were shut against them, and they were met with hostility from caste Hindus.
Don't confuse with
- Guruvayur satyagraha (1931–32): this was a temple-entry campaign in Kerala led by K. Kelappan. Ambedkar was not its leader.
