Krishak Praja Party
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Krishak Praja Party was a peasant-based party in Bengal, led by A.K. Fazlul Huq. "Krishak praja" means peasant tenants. The party spoke for tenant farmers against zamindars, the big landlords who collected rent from them. It demanded tenants' rights and an end to the zamindari system. Its success showed that many Bengali Muslim peasants first followed a peasant party, not the Muslim League.
Example
After the 1937 provincial elections, Fazlul Huq became Premier (chief minister) of Bengal, leading a coalition with the Muslim League. In March 1940 Huq moved the Lahore Resolution at the League's session.
Don't confuse with
- Muslim League: the League's main identity was religious, as the voice of Muslims. The Krishak Praja Party's main appeal was economic, as the voice of peasants against landlords.
