Meaning

The Lahore conspiracy case was the trial of Bhagat Singh and his comrades of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA), a group of young revolutionaries. It came from the killing of a British police officer, J.P. Saunders, in Lahore in December 1928. The young men had meant to punish the police for the beating that led to Lala Lajpat Rai's death during the protest against the Simon Commission. The trial turned Bhagat Singh into a national hero, and "Inquilab Zindabad!" ("Long live revolution!") became a popular slogan.

Example

In December 1928 Bhagat Singh and Rajguru shot Saunders in Lahore. Chandrashekhar Azad covered their escape, and Sukhdev helped plan the attack. A special court sentenced the three to death. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged on 23 March 1931. Bhagat Singh was only 23.

Don't confuse with

  • Assembly bomb case (1929): this was a separate trial. It came from the harmless bombs that Bhagat Singh and Batukeswar Dutt threw in the Central Legislative Assembly in April 1929. The punishment there was transportation for life, not death.
