Also called: Jaisi · Topic: Bhakti and Sufi Traditions · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Bhakti-Sufi Traditions"
Meaning
Malik Muhammad Jayasi (also written Jaisi) was a sufi poet of the 16th century from Awadh, in present-day Uttar Pradesh. He wrote the Padmavat in 1540 in Awadhi, a local language. The poem is a masnavi, a long poem in which human love stands for the soul's love of God. His work shows how sufis used local languages and local stories to share their ideas.
Example
The Padmavat (1540) tells the love story of Padmini and Ratansen, the king of Chittor. Their trials stand for the soul's difficult journey towards God. Such poems were often recited in sufi hospices.
Don't confuse with
- Padmavati legend as history: The Padmavat is a poetic allegory, which means a story with a hidden meaning. It is not an eyewitness record of Chittor's history.
