Nathuram Godse
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
Nathuram Godse was the Hindu extremist who killed Mahatma Gandhi. On 30 January 1948 he shot Gandhi dead at Gandhi's evening prayer meeting at Birla House in Delhi. An earlier attempt on Gandhi's life had failed on 20 January. Godse hated Gandhi's work for Hindu–Muslim peace and his concern for Muslims in both India and Pakistan. He was tried and hanged in 1949.
Example
In his last months Gandhi fasted and walked for peace in Bengal and then in Delhi. He also insisted that India treat its minorities fairly. Godse shot him at the prayer meeting on 30 January 1948. Tributes came from all over the world, including from George Orwell and Albert Einstein, and Time magazine compared his death to Abraham Lincoln's.
