History glossary

Also called: Ahmadnagar sultanate · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Nizam Shahi dynasty ruled the Ahmadnagar sultanate in the north-western Deccan. Malik Ahmad (Ahmad Nizam Shah), a former Bahmani governor, founded it in c. 1490. It was one of the five Deccan Sultanates. It fought hard against the Mughals for many years, but Shah Jahan finally annexed (took over) Ahmadnagar in 1633.

Example

In 1565, Ahmadnagar joined Bijapur and Golconda to defeat Vijayanagara at Rakshasi-Tangadi (Talikota). Later, in 1595–96, the Ahmadnagar princess Chand Bibi defended its fort against Akbar's army.

Don't confuse with

  • Nizams of Hyderabad: they were a separate 18th-century dynasty founded by Asaf Jah. They were not related to the Nizam Shahis of Ahmadnagar.
