Also called: Golconda sultanate · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Qutb Shahi dynasty ruled the Golconda sultanate, one of the five Deccan Sultanates. Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk, a former Bahmani governor, founded it in the early 16th century. The kingdom was rich because of its diamond mines and its trade. It lasted until Aurangzeb captured Golconda in 1687.
Example
In 1565, Golconda joined Bijapur and Ahmadnagar to defeat Vijayanagara at Rakshasi-Tangadi (Talikota). Later, the Qutb Shahi ruler Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded Hyderabad and built the Charminar (c. 1591).
Don't confuse with
- Adil Shahi dynasty: this dynasty ruled Bijapur, not Golconda, and Aurangzeb ended it one year earlier, in 1686.
